Staying fit while staying in

With work-from-home becoming the new normal and pajamas being the preferred OOTD, we’re seeing a lot of things change during the lockdown. As we all try to come to terms with the prevailing situation, remember to not let your health go for a toss — especially for those looking to keep their anxieties in check. Physical fitness is an essential coping mechanism.

But how do you manage to stay healthy with gyms and fitness centers shut down? Worry not! We have some solutions. Let’s dive right in.

Be active

Firstly and most importantly, vow to yourself to be active. Don’t use the lockdown as an excuse for slacking off from some exercise. Even if you’re not a fitness buff, it’s crucial to maintain good health. Dust off your athletic wear and start with some good-old stretching exercises. If that doesn’t motivate you, something as simple as walking up and down the stairs or gardening can help you stay in shape. And if you don’t have the space to do so without coming in contact with others, try clocking 10,000 steps indoors using apps like Pedometer or Google Fit.

Create a personal workout station

Most of you are used to working out at gyms and fitness centers and don’t have the luxury of a home gym. However, you can all build your own workout stations — and it’s easier than you think. Dedicate a certain space in your home with some dumbbells, yoga mats, or resistance bands for daily fitness sessions — be it yoga, cardio, or Zumba. If you don’t have the necessary equipment for your workout, use a bit of your creativity and see how you can utilize things lying around in your house for exercise. For instance, you can use your chair for squats or a bag of flour as a heavy weight. Remember, many things you own can be used for exercise, one way or the other. And what’s more, even taking time to do home chores helps. Sweeping and cleaning your home can be an efficient way to declutter and give yourself the exercise you need.

Maintain a routine

With all that’s going on, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed — which, in turn, affects your productivity. What helps in situations like these, is chalking out a clear routine, so you can manage your day better. If you had a dedicated training time before, then stick to it. This will give you a sense of reassurance and help you sail smoothly through the day.

Eat healthy

The importance of eating healthy food can’t be stressed enough. In addition to regular exercise, make sure you follow a healthy diet to amp up your strength. Eat home-cooked meals as much as you can and include lots of vegetables and fruits that are high in vitamin C, zinc, and iron in your diet. These nutrients can boost your immunity and help you steer clear of infections and diseases at all times. A glass of turmeric milk can also give you the same benefits.

Rest well

An overload of mundane routines and strenuous activities are bound to put a strain on your physical and mental well-being. So, be sure to take breaks and get enough rest at regular intervals, as it is vital for healing your body and reducing stress. If the body is in a constant state of stress it can curb the functioning of your immune system. So, in between all the hustle and bustle, have some ‘me’ time and unwind.

In the end, it all boils down to how you optimize your time at home to keep yourself fit — be it exercise, meditation, or simply avoiding junk food.
