Winter Treats: Spice up your plate

Vanilla-scented winter days
Winter reminds us of the smell of warm and fresh homemade bread. It reminds us of soft wool around our freezing bodies and hot chocolate drinks in our hands. Winter makes us crave treats that transport us to a warmer place with heightened flavours. So, today we are taking you through some quick DIY recipes to spice up your plate (and mood) in this cold goodness.

Pumpkin Spiced Latte

You might have seen this fancy drink adorning Instagram stories and Starbucks stores. But here’s a secret — it is very easy to make at home. All you need is pumpkin purée, coffee, milk, and fall spices. Heat some milk and bring together all the ingredients with a few drops of vanilla essence. Then, it’s time for some strong coffee infusion and a thick swirl of whipped cream that will definitely make it 10x better. If you want to make this latter tastier, replace normal milk with almond milk for added nutty flavour! And ta-da, you have your homemade Pumpkin Spiced Latte ready for all your winter days.

Mulled Wine

If you’re looking for the perfect drink for a date night – with yourself or your beau – mulled wine will win your heart! Grab a bottle of wine, and don’t worry about how fancy the label is. Getting started, heat the wine without bubbles and let it simmer for a couple of hours. Add some peeled oranges to the mix and throw in a couple of cinnamon sticks to enhance its aroma and flavor. We also like some cloves and star anise, but use them according to your palette. You could also add some natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, or give this drink a makeover with some bourbon or cognac. Strain, serve, and relish your winter evenings.

Flourless Walnut Brownies

Who doesn’t love some homemade, chocolate-filled, gooey loving? Take a handful of walnuts, dry roast them till you can feel the aroma overwhelming you. Now, generously pour condensed milk in another pan and add chunks of dark chocolate to it. Melt the mixture and let it simmer. Once thickened, add the walnuts to the mix and swirl it around. Pour the mix into a container, sprinkle some sugar dust, and place it in the fridge. Let it sit for a couple of hours and then break them into big bites to lose yourself in the heavenly flavor of your homemade walnut brownies.

Korean Cream Cheese Garlic Bread

It’s almost unfair to introduce you to drinks and dessert recipes with no mention of delicious winter savories. If you love cheese and bread, this recipe is going to be your regular after today. A lot of us lack the patience to make buns from scratch so we make do with store-bought buns. Now we quickly move on to our delicious cream cheese and our very own garlic butter. Combine paneer and curd and blend it till smooth. Pour the mixture into a knotted muslin cloth and refrigerate it. Meanwhile, melt some butter and roast some garlic and coriander with a pinch of salt and pepper. You’ll have a bun that’s cut to slices. Pour generous amounts of cream cheese and garlic-butter mixture into the gaps with some shredded mozzarella on top. Roast this for a couple of minutes in a microwave or an oven, and bite into this creamy-cheesy savory that’s not just delicious but filling.

There you go, that’s four of our DIY winter treat ideas. All you have to do now is to try them out, take pictures of your yummy food, and tell us about them!
